Buckingham Palace has been the official home of the Royal Family for over 166 years,  Queen Victoria was the first monarch to make Buckingham Palace her official home. It is possible to tell if  the present Queen is in residence, if the flag on the east front is flying the Queen is in residence. 

In the summer the Royal family moves to the court of Balmoral it is at this time that the palace open's for a few weeks in order that the general public can visit.
